Nomenclatural novelties in the Postia caesia complex
Within the genus Postia, the P. caesia complex forms a distinctive morphological group. Based on recent molecular data, the current taxonomic status of the P. caesia complex is discussed and the nomenclature of the related taxa is revised as well. New combinations are: Postia subg. Cyanosporus, Postia africana, Postia amyloidea, Postia caesioflava, and Postia coeruleivirens.
متن کاملNomenclatural novelties and notes in Penstemon (Plantaginaceae)
Seven nomenclatural novelties in Penstemon (Plantaginaceae) are proposed for taxa that will be included in the forthcoming treatment of the genus in the Flora of North America North of Mexico series. Three additional novelties are made for Mexican taxa outside the flora area. Penstemon xylus A. Nelson is determined to be the correct name for the species heretofore called P. tusharensis N. Holmg...
متن کاملNovelties in Cardueae (Asteraceae)
The current investigations suggest the segregation of Jurinea cartilaginea from Jurinea, and its placement among Centaureinae. Molecular studies, based on the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacers (nrITS), chromosome number data and pollen morphology, support the morphological results. Based on these results, J. cartilaginea is related to and, therefore, transferred to the genus Karvan...
متن کاملEvolutionary novelties
How novel traits arise in organisms has long been a major problem in biology. Indeed, the sharpest critiques of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection often centered on explaining how novel body parts arose. In his response to The Origin of Species, St. George J. Mivart challenged Darwin to explain the origin of evolutionary novelties such as the mammary gland, asking if it was "conc...
متن کاملMorphology of Mosses (Phylum Bryophyta)
With over 12,000 species recognized worldwide (M. R. Crosby et al. 1999), the Bryophyta, or mosses, are the most speciose of the three phyla of bryophytes. The other two phyla are Marchantiophyta or liverworts and Anthocerotophyta or hornworts. The term “bryophytes” is a general, inclusive term for these three groups though they are only superficially related. Mosses are widely distributed from...
